April's Blooms

Springtime has brought a Miners Lettuce show in the Canyon! Miners lettuce, also known as Roohreh (Claytonia perfoliata), grows abundantly in Garber Park. The park’s oak woodland habitat provides shade and retains moisture for this ground cover. This annual plant is native to a large portion of western North America, and can be found in almost every county of California (Plant range map here).

Look for miner's lettuce bright green fleshy (succulent) leaves growin around the base of the plant. A more pronounced and fused circular pair of leaves also grows below its flower and can reach up to 8 inches in length! Thanks to the rainy season we have been welcomed by a display of small white and pale pink flowers, which bloom from February through June. Explore the Canyon during springtime to see this plant in bloom! (Learn more here and here). Photo: Ruby J. Soto Cardona

Welcome Scout Troop 202!

Last month, team leader John Brochu and Garber Park Stewards’ Ruby and Wyllie collaborated with the scouts of Troop 202. Approximately 20 scouts and six adults worked in the Upper Canyon to complete a stewardship project which was spearheaded by Ellery Garcia (far right) as part of her final project to earn the Eagle Scout rank.

This was a rewarding three-part project which encompassed a replacement of a puncheon on the Willow Trail, removal of overgrown vegetation around young redwood trees and removal of invasive broom along the Summit House Trail. We thank Troop 202 for their hard work and efforts towards the restoration of the Canyon and hope you can enjoy it on your next hike! (Photo: John Brochu).

If your scout troop is interested in doing a project in Claremont Canyon, please email us at info@claremontcanyon.org.

Work on the Memorandum of Understanding to enable the various local government agencies to work together to prevent wildfire is at a new and exciting juncture. Our attorney Shayna van Hoften at the Hanson Bridgett law firm is meeting with the attorneys representing the member agencies of the MOU working group to review the draft MOU agreement and work out the final language. Then the draft will go to the various agencies’ elected bodies (the city councils and boards of supervisors) to approve.
